Master Gardener Level I Classes

MSU/Lewis & Clark County Extension is offering the Level I Master Gardener classes in Helena beginning April 5th . The classes meet on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at the UM-Helena Campus in their lecture hall. There are 9 classes in this series. The cost of the class is $105, which includes the cost of the Master Gardener Handbook and a $25 deposit that is refunded upon completion of 20 hours of volunteer time. The Extension office is offering two $40 scholarship for the class, and the Helena Garden Club is sponsoring a $40 scholarship to help pay for the class.
The topics that will be covered in the level I class include: soils and nutrients, plant growth and development, vegetable gardening, herbaceous ornamentals, native plants, planting and maintaining trees and shrubs, pruning, turfgrass, irrigation, small fruit, tree fruit, composting and integrated pest management. Guest speakers will be coming to speak to the class as well. This will be the third consecutive year that the Master Gardener classes have been taught in Helena, and every year we have more fun. Come join the fun and become a Master Gardener.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will return to Helena for what may be the only Montana show of his 2012 tour, officials say.
Seinfeld is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m. Friday, May 18, at the Helena Civic Center. Tickets are $62 to $78 and go on sale March 23.

Safe Sitter class for youth ages 11-13 will be offered at St. Peter’s Hospital. The class meets two days, Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
Class Content includes how to deal with medical emergencies, baby-sitting as a business, what to do when a child chokes, responsibilities, age appropriate activities, safety and more. Students must pass a written exam and demonstrate rescue breathing/choking techniques to receive a certificate of completion. Students do not receive CPR certification in this class.

St. Peter’s Wellness is offering affordable health screenings to the public on Tuesday, May 22, from 6:30 – 10 a.m., in the hospital’s Education Center.
The $42 comprehensive wellness screening includes a computerized health risk appraisal for a report on chronic disease risk, nutrition, and fitness and a blood draw for glucose, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides. Also included is a blood pressure and flexibility check, Body Mass Index measurement, pulse rate, oxygen levels, hearing screening, and grip strength.
Participants must fast for 12 hours prior to the screening and should drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol for 24 hours. Screenings are completed within 15 minutes; results are mailed the next day and are kept strictly confidential.
No insurance will be billed through St. Peter’s Wellness. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. An appointment required at www.stpetes.org/community or by calling 444-2128 |

Rocks Rock Mini the class will explore everything cool about rocks. Students will go rock hunting, create rock art, adopt a pet rock, and practice amateur geology. All of these classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. each class day. Join community partners in raising public awareness through a Ten Mile 10‑miler fun run/walk or a 5K Run/walk and educational event beginning and ending at the Ten Mile Water Treatment Plant located at 1115 Rimini Rd. Proceeds will extend to the Lake Helena Watershed Group and the Mt. Discovery Foundation to promote education and stewardship for this critically important community asset. The 10 miler will begin at 8:00 A.M. and the 5k will begin at 9:00 A.M. Pre‑registration is $15.00 and includes a T-shirt. Same day registration is available from 7:00 ‑ 7:30 A.M. with a cost of $ 20.00 and no guarantee of a shirt. There will be music, awards, refreshments and many educational opportunities concerning the watershed. The City of Helena and the Lake Helena Watershed Group and the MT. Discovery Foundation have partnered to bring you this event.
